and cultural quality of the whole nation. Citizens of
the People's Republic of China can take part in self-study
tests according to The Temporary Regulation On Self-study
Test in Higher Education without limitation of gender,
age, race, nationality and educated level.
The schools
that are in charge of the national self-study examination
are full time ordinary higher education schools with strong
teaching team selected by the provincial self-study examination
committee. These schools accept the leading of the provincial
self-study examination committee, take part in the proposition
and review work, and take charge of the test on practical
skills. There are 315 full-time ordinary universities
including Peking University are selected to shoulder this
task.
The participants
of self-study examination are mainly self-educated students.
The participants can select styles of face-to-face teaching,
distance teaching, broadcasting, television, audio-video
to accept instruction and guidance.
The self-study
examination is hold twice annually on dates regulated
by the Instruction Committee of
National Self-study Examination of Higher Education.
Students can sign up for the examination provided in the
local area on subjects selected at their own will. The

catalog for self-study examination of higher education
adjusted in 1998 includes 23 categories (philosophy, economic
management, legislation, sociology, politics, public security,
education, Chinese language and literature, foreign language
and literature, journalism, art, history, science, mining,
machinery, electrics and information, civil engineering,
chemistry, light industry, textile and foodstuff, transportation,
traffic, agriculture, pharmaceutical, military) and 224
specialties (141 technological subjects, 61 independent
undergraduate subjects and 22 subjects in between).
The self-study/examination
program adopts a credit system. Separate examinations
are held for courses offered. Applicants are not restricted
by formal record of schooling and age. Those passing examinations
are given certificates. When a student's accumulated credits
reach requirements for graduation, the All-China Self-Study/Examination
Program Committee will award him or her a graduation certificate
that comes of the following variety: graduation certificate
for polytechnic and vocational school studies, and for
college and university studies. There are also certificates
for individual subjects. Some schools authorized to issue
college diplomas can issue BA diplomas, which the State
recognizes. In recent years, the self-study/examination
system is introduced also to the rural areas. |
